When you step onto the 72‑story glass terrace of The Shard, the city stretches beneath you like a glittering carpet. The bar opens at 6 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m. on weekends, giving you a two‑hour window to sip a signature cocktail— the Shard Spritz— before the view fades into night. The only downside? The 35 pound cover charge covers a 45‑minute stay; if you want more time, you’ll need to upgrade to the premium lounge.
Midweek Chill at The Roof Gardens
The Roof Gardens in the heart of St. James’s offers a lush oasis that feels worlds away from the hustle below. With 12,000 square feet of greenery, the bar is a 45‑minute escape where a flat‑bottle wine list costs £12 per glass. The venue closes at 11 p.m., so plan your visit before the last call. The only drawback is the limited parking: you’ll have to rely on the underground car park two blocks away.
Sunset Vibes at Sky Garden
Sky Garden’s terrace opens at 4 p.m. and remains open until midnight on Saturdays. The 120‑foot high platform offers panoramic views of the Thames and the London Eye. A 30‑minute cocktail session is free with a drink purchase, but the bar’s busiest hour is 7 p.m.— 8 p.m., when the line can stretch up to 20 minutes. If you’re in a hurry, the nearby Metro station is only a 3‑minute walk away.
Nightcap at The Curtain
Located on the 25th floor of a former cinema, The Curtain’s industrial décor pairs with a 48‑hour menu that changes daily. The bar opens at 5 p.m. and closes at 2 a.m., perfect for late‑night conversations. Prices hover around £8 for a craft beer and £18 for a gin cocktail. The only limitation? The bar’s 18‑plus policy means you’ll need to show ID if you’re younger.
Weekend Brunch at The Sky Bar
For brunch lovers, The Sky Bar on the 50th floor of the Hilton offers a 10‑hour menu from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The eggs Benedict costs £15, and a glass of Champagne is £22. The view of the city skyline is unbeatable, but the 4‑hour time limit on the brunch menu can feel restrictive if you’re a slow eater.

Which Rooftop to Choose?
If you want a high‑end experience with a panoramic city view, The Shard is the clear winner—just be ready to pay the cover. For a relaxed, garden‑filled atmosphere, The Roof Gardens offers a unique setting but requires planning around parking. Sky Garden is ideal for sunset drinks and is very accessible via public transport, though lines can be long. The Curtain appeals to those who enjoy a late‑night buzz and a historic backdrop, while The Sky Bar is the best pick for a brunch outing. Whichever you select, remember to book in advance and check the closing times to make the most of your London rooftop adventure.
